Welcome to Metuchen Golf & Country Club
Since its inception, the Metuchen Golf and Country Club has progressively fulfilled the primary goal set forth by its original founders—to encourage the playing of golf and other recreational activity that promote superior social intercourse. On November 22, 1915, the following five gentlemen formed a corporation known as Metuchen Golf and Country Club: Edward Burroughs, Alexander C. Litterst, George S. Silzer, Walter Williams, and Washington Wilson. Appointed first trustees, these founders initially operated in the Bank Building on Main Street, Metuchen, as the golf course began developing on approximately 60 acres of rented property that included the lands of Ames, Prickitt, Benner, and Carvalho. In 1924, Mrs. C. B. Ames leased a structure on Plainfield Avenue to serve as the new clubhouse, and less than a year later the membership voted unanimously to purchase 100 acres of land northeast of the existing course to build an impressive eighteen-hole golf course.
With the opening of the 1927 season, Scottish greens keeper-professional Charles Laing collaborated with Marty O’ Laughlin, professional at Plainfield Country Club, in the design and construction of the new eighteen hole layout, which officially opened for play on Decoration Day, 1931. The evolution of Metuchen Golf and Country Club’s course to its present championship stature is marked by four distinct changes: first, its Nine Hole Phase (1915-1926), the original layout; second, its Expansion Phase (1926-1964), the Club’s acquisition of more acreage for expansion; third, its Watered Phase (1964-1974), the approved installation of a watering system to cover all greens, tees, and fairways; and fourth, its Brett Price Phase (1974-present), the transformation of Metuchen into one of the best maintained and most challenging courses under the supervision of Brett Price, former Greens Superintendent. Additionally, women golfers have prominently contributed to the club, holding tournaments since 1928 and formalizing their own Association in 1949. Today, Metuchen’s golf course stretches 6,641 yards, and has successfully evolved from the makeshift links it had once been to an outstanding plush layout with tree-lined fairways and fast greens groomed daily to tournament condition.
In 1959, the construction for a swimming pool was approved, and its completion effectively attracted new members with young children, thus adding another social and family dimension to the club. In July of 1999, the entire facility was reconstructed, and an Olympic-size pool, a diving end, new locker rooms, a snack bar that connects to the kitchen, and extensive patio space were included. Well-attended pool parties have become an annual tradition, and the swimming team still continues to participate in spirited competition with other local teams.
Presently, the Metuchen Golf and Country Club stands beautifully crafted. The new front entrance faces Oak Grove Lane, the new kitchen, pro shop, halfway house, and pool render outstanding services, and the dining room overlooks the well-manicured golf course. Through the years, Metuchen Golf and Country Club continues to remain New Jersey’s hidden gem, and its members look forward to celebrating their club’s 100-year anniversary in 2015.
